DAVID ATKINS ENTERPRISES DELIVERS WORLD’S LARGEST OUTDOOR
MULTI-MEDIA DISPLAY FOR EXPO 2010 SHANGHAI
SHANGHAI, Friday 30 April 2010: The world’s second largest city exploded into a blaze of colour today as Shanghai officially kicked off Expo 2010 with the largest outdoor multi-media display in history.
Not only is Shanghai staging the largest World Expo since its inception in 1851 – and producing the first-ever Expo Opening Ceremony of this scale - the Outdoor Opening Ceremony of Expo 2010 showcased a combination of creativity and technology the likes of which have not been seen before on the world stage.
The half-hour outdoor spectacular consisted of three segments – Welcome to China, Harmonious Gathering and Celebration – and was a non-stop pageant of lights, lasers, LED graphics, fountains, boats, music and fireworks along a 3.4km stretch of the Huangpu River in central Shanghai.
The groundbreaking spectacle was devised and produced with the Organizing Committee of Expo 2010 Shanghai China by David Atkins Enterprises, the Australian-based company with a global portfolio of major events to its credit, including the Opening, Closing and Victory Ceremonies of the recent Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Doha 2006 Asian Games and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, as well as the Handover Ceremonies for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.
“We are deeply honoured to have been selected as the foreign producer of the Outdoor Opening Ceremony, and to have been given the opportunity to be involved in such a prestigious landmark event in the history of modern China,” said David Atkins, CEO of DAE Worldwide.
Artistic Directors Ignatius Jones and David Atkins said the Outdoor Opening Ceremony was designed to cement Shanghai’s status as one of the world’s great cities, by showcasing the latest technology in outdoor spectacular events.
“We’ve presented the themes and messages of Expo in a visually striking and modern way, weaving traditional Chinese elements and music throughout,” said Ignatius Jones.
The opening segment Welcome to China began with a 3.4km long ‘red carpet’ rolling out from 1200 red searchlights stationed along both sides of the Huangpu River between Lupu and Nanpu Bridges, with ‘Welcome to Shanghai’ written in lasers on the river. In an extravaganza of laser and lighting effects, the skyline of both the Pudong and Puxi sides of the river were successively illuminated, and in a dazzling finale to the segment, hundreds of white searchlights swept around Lupu Bridge to form a ‘lace’ vortex, like giant blinking ‘eyelashes’ of light.
Some of the other spectacular effects in the Ceremony included the release of 6,000 glowing LED balls on the river, followed by the first-ever aquatic parade of participating countries and organizations at an Expo, with 220 boats in two chevron formations bearing the flags.
In a ceremony filled with groundbreaking effects and superlatives, one of the world’s largest fountain displays measuring 250m long with jets as high as 80m, danced to the Blue Danube waltz, and the largest-ever LED screen, measuring 280m x 33m, was used as the central storyboard of the show to weave a narrative of civilization and cities, humanity, nature and technology through a series of high-tech visual imagery.
The extensive sound system, supported by the world’s largest optical fibre network, enabled guests to enjoy musical accompaniment along the 3.4km site – from Chinese favourites such as Butterfly Lovers and Good News From Beijing Comes To Border Villages, to Malcolm McLaren’s remix of Strauss’s Blue Danube waltz, Beethoven’s Ode to Joy and Australian dance music composer Peewee Ferris’s Harmonious Gathering techno piece.
The Outdoor Ceremony set the Shanghai night sky ablaze, with a total of almost 200,000 pyrotechnic effects, launched from 15 barges along the 3.4km stretch of river, as well as Lupu Bridge, 7 high-rise rooftops, two land sites, and Shanghai’s landmark – the Oriental Pearl Tower. The firework effects used in the display equated to three of Sydney’s New Year’s Eve displays and more than ten of the London New Year’s Eve displays.
Attending the Opening Ceremony was Hu Jintao, President of the People’s Republic of China as well as leading figures from the Governments of China and many of the 190 participating countries.
